The Struggles of Homeless Youth

Bum. Drifter. Vagrant. Hobo. Street person. Homeless.

I personally take issue with all but the last word, because every person is valued and has worth, and should never be made to feel otherwise. No matter the term of reference used, please remember that the homeless are people that need and deserve your love, support, and compassion.

In my previous articles on homelessness (here and here), I touched on statistics which paint the horrifying reality of how many Americans are plagued by this growing epidemic. Now, imagine the children that are affected, and the struggles they face on a daily basis. Approximately 1 out of every 30 (upwards of 2.5 million children in the US overall) kids and teens will bear the burden of homelessness. As children, they are helpless to better their situations without any assistance; they cannot work and often struggle just to keep a daily routine, such as attending school. For teens, it becomes even more difficult, as many choose work (money and something to eat) over receiving their education.

In an effort to help alleviate the burden these children bear, I have joined Covenant House for their Sleep Out initiative on March 18th in New York City. Please consider helping to support me with a donation (every donation counts, big or small, and helps these kids) by visiting my Sleep Out page here:

About Covenant House
For millions of homeless kids, basic needs like a hearty meal, warm bed, and safe shelter are true luxuries. Instead of knowing the joys of childhood, homeless kids face the life-or-death dangers of living on the streets. Covenant House was founded more than 40 years ago with the mission to serve these young people with absolute respect and unconditional love.
Today, Covenant House is the largest privately-funded agency in the Americas providing food, shelter, immediate crisis care, and essential services to homeless youth in 27 cities throughout the United States, Canada and Latin America.
But they don’t stop at offering an immediate safe harbor. They strive to move each young person forward down the path to an independent adulthood, free from the risk of future homelessness. Every young person receives individual attention from caring adults who are ready to lend a hand up to a better opportunity.

What can your donation do?
I know that sometimes it’s hard to decide which cause or organization to give to – everyone seems deserving, and there’s only so much to go around. So let me tell you specifically what your money can do for the kids at Covenant House.
  • $100 provides a week of meals for two kids
  • $275 provides medical care for one teenager or young adult
  • $500 trains a volunteer to serve these young people
  • $1,000 provides a young man or woman with job training and employment preparation
No matter the size of your donation, the value of it to these kids who have so little is enormous. It’s a symbol that you care. So please, be as generous as you can – with your heart as well as your wallet. You’ll feel almost as great about it as the kids will.

Thank you.
